Founded in 1995 by Gordon B. Lang, GBL was built on a foundation of actuarial expertise and a commitment to helping Canadian business owners and incorporated professionals navigate complex tax and retirement planning challenges.

Channing is the President and Principal Consultant, Pension and Benefits, at GBL Human Capital, where he leads the practice and advises employers on innovative group retirement and benefits strategies.
He brings a wealth of advisory and leadership experience from senior roles, including Regional Vice President at a leading North American benefits consulting firm and Regional Director at one of Canada’s largest insurance companies. His background gives him a unique perspective on both the consulting and carrier sides of the industry.
Channing is dedicated to helping employers design sustainable, high-value benefit programs and ensuring employees achieve meaningful retirement outcomes. Working closely with his team of actuarial experts, he provides trusted advice to organizations of all sizes, enabling them to optimize their programs and strengthen their compensation strategies.
Outside of his professional role, Channing’s international upbringing and roots in the Canadian Rockies have shaped his passion for exploration. He spends his free time chasing powder on the slopes and seeking out new adventures through travel.
Chief Actuary
Navaz is GBL’s Chief Actuary. He oversees GBL Human Capital’s actuarial services for GBL’s pension products and health benefit plans for both active and retired employee groups. He has over 20 years of actuarial and national consulting experience and brings a diverse range of skills to GBL including strategic planning, cost containment solutions, and tax strategies.
Navaz also has extensive consulting experience dealing with various aspects of HR consulting for small and large clients, both in the public and private domain as it relates to both flexible and traditional benefit plans
Navaz is committed to growing the GBL brand and ensuring GBL continues to be a market leader. When he is not working, Navaz enjoys spending time with his family, and working on his slice on the golf course as he pursues his dream of joining the Senior PGA.
Principal Consultant, Group Benefits and Corporate Planning
Justin Hauk is Principal Consultant, Benefits & Corporate Planning at GBL Human Capital. Drawing on senior experience with a major North American insurance firm, he brings a creative, solutions-focused approach to managing employer benefit programs and advising business owners on complex corporate insurance strategies.
Justin leads GBL’s benefits team in delivering comprehensive service and administration for employer-sponsored plans across Canada. His discipline and technical expertise make him a sought-after consultant for employers seeking sustainable, innovative, and customized solutions.
Outside of work, Justin is an enthusiastic (if inconsistent) golfer who enjoys automotives, cheering on the Toronto Blue Jays, and spending time in his hometown of Richmond, BC.
Senior Vice President, Growth & Corporate Development
Ryan oversees GBL’s growth nationally and is responsible for the development of new revenue streams and corporate development initiatives. Ryan first joined GBL in 2015 and during this time guided business owners, incorporated professionals, and their advisors through advanced retirement and tax planning strategies such as IPPs, RCAs, FMVs, and cross-border strategies. He is now focused on growing GBL’s consulting services, including Corporate Pension Plan Consulting and Administration, Supplemental Executive Retirement Plans (SERPs), and other pension and executive compensation initiatives.
Ryan was born and raised in small town Ontario, before moving to Toronto for his studies at the University of Toronto and subsequently growing a career in capital markets and recruiting prior to joining GBL. He has completed his MBA at the Ivey Business School, currently sits on the Calgary Petroleum Club's Board of Governors, and has founded a startup and supported the growth of others. Ryan lives in Calgary with his wife and two sons.
Vice President, Actuarial
As the manager of GBL’s actuarial department, Laura trains and supports our actuarial analysts and oversees the completion of the carrier negotiations and valuation reports. She also consults with clients on their more technical aspects of retirement planning, corporate benefit plans, and fair market valuation of life insurance. Laura also provides actuarial consulting services to clients across Canada. When she’s not doing complex math equations (which she enjoys!) she’s strapping up her skis and hitting the slopes and enjoying the restaurant scene in Calgary.
Vice President, Plan Administration
Margie oversees GBL’s plan administration team. A seasoned pension and benefits industry expert, Magie’s specialties are monitoring plan and trust compliance, regulatory filings and plan audits. Margie spends her free time in the kitchen, gardening, and entertaining friends.
Manager, Client Relations & Development
Tatenda is GBL’s Manager of Client Relations and Development. He empowers GBL’s clientele to make retirement and tax planning decisions with regards to GBL’s suite of products and solutions. Having started his career at GBL as an actuarial analyst, Tatenda has a deep knowledge of GBL’s products which helps him deliver valuable product knowledge and education to advisors and their clients. Outside of work, Tatenda enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons.
Manager, Actuarial
Rob is the Manager of Actuarial Services, supporting a wide range of clients with all aspects of the valuation and administration of their retirement and benefit programs. With over 20 years of experience in consulting and pension & benefits administration, Rob brings deep expertise and practical insight to every client engagement.
Before moving into the actuarial field, Rob worked as a software developer and holds a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics from the University of Calgary.
Senior Vice President and Actuary
Pat is the Senior Vice President and Actuary at GBL Human Capital. He began his actuarial career after earning his degree in Actuarial Mathematics from the University of Western Ontario in 1980. With more than 40 years of experience across the Actuarial, insurance industry, Pat has supported a broad range of private and public sector clients with their pension, benefits, and post-retirement programs.
He also works closely with family law practitioners, offering actuarial expertise in the division of pensions during marriage breakdowns.
Outside of work, Pat is often behind a camera, patiently searching for that perfect landscape shot.
